CHAT TRANSCRIPT

Beyond spreading the Dharma, what are the “nuts and bolts” organizational and business aspects of leading and operating a Zen sangha? What basic, practical understanding should teachers have about how a sangha can best meet its legal, tax, and financial responsibilities? To what extent can we expect to make a living from our teaching and what are the tax considerations from the payments we receive?

Some items that came up during the roundtable:

  1. Overview of the relationship between the sangha and the corporate structure of the non-profit that supports it.
  2. Main points of non-profit incorporation, conflicts of interest, tax reporting and exemption.
  3. Responsibilities of the board of directors and the corporate officers.
  4. State and federal reporting requirements.
  5. Finance and accounting best practices.
  6. Insurance – general liability and special Directors and Officers insurance.
  7. How do we make a living as a Zen teacher? How do we provide for our retirement?
