Michael Mugaku Zimmerman received Jukai in 1998, and was ordained in the Soto Zen lineage by Genpo Merzel Roshi in 2003.

In 2006, Michael received Shiho, Dharma Transmission, from Genpo Roshi, and became a Zen teacher. In 2018, he received Inka, the Final Seal of Approval, from Sidney Musai Walter Roshi in the White Plum lineage of Taizan Maezumi Roshi.

He is an attorney, a former Chief Justice of the Utah Supreme Court, and is active in the practice of law in his appellate firm.

Mugaku Roshi is a nationally recognized teacher of mediation and mindfulness for the legal profession. He and his wife, Diane Musho Hamilton Roshi have presented programs for the Utah State Bar and other legal organizations. They are co-founders of Two Arrows Zen, a center for Zen study and practice with locations in Salt Lake City and Torrey, Utah.

Together, Diane and Michael have four children and five grandchildren.
