Jim Daikan Bastien began Zen practice under the guidance of Rev. Teijo Munnich, a senior monastic of Dainin Katagiri Roshi in 1979. He received Jukai from Katagiri Roshi in 1988. He did koan study beginning in 1990 with Zen Master Soeng Hyang of the Providence Zen Center and received the precepts in the Kwan Um School of Zen from Korean Zen Master Seung Sahn in 1992. He began training with Roshi Bernie Glassman in 2005 and received dharma transmission from him in 2011. He was empowered as a Lay Preceptor in 2011 by Roshi Eve Marko. As a Lay Zen Teacher, Daikan's focus is on "work practice", in the tradition of Roshi Bernie's life work, providing dharma-informed, human services to the homeless, prison inmates, veterans, and other marginalized populations.
